The short version: Stem Head has no accounts, no logins, no ads, and sets no tracking cookies. We don't sell your data or build a profile on you. The little data we do touch is used only to keep the site online and stop abuse.

Who we are

Stem Head (stemhead.live) is a free, non-commercial fan project that lets you pull apart Grateful Dead live recordings — streamed from the Internet Archive — into separate instrument stems. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Grateful Dead or Grateful Dead Merchandising.

What we collect (and why)

We keep this deliberately tiny:

Your IP address — held briefly in the server's memory, and in a daily tally that resets every day, only to limit how many shows any one visitor can queue for processing and to stop bots from hammering the site. This is a security/anti-abuse measure. We do not use it to identify you or track you across sites, and it is not kept as a long-term history.
Anonymous visit counts — we store day-by-day totals (page views, how many shows were requested, roughly how many people played the daily game). These are plain numbers with no names or IPs attached.
Privacy-friendly analytics — we use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookieless and does not fingerprint or track individual visitors. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

We do not collect your name, email, or location, we do not ask you to create an account, and the site sets no advertising or tracking cookies.

Tips (payments)

If you choose to leave a tip, the payment is handled entirely by Stripe on Stripe's own secure pages. Your card details never touch Stem Head's servers — we only receive a confirmation of the amount so we can top up the processing budget. Tips are voluntary and are not required to use anything on the site.

Who else is involved

To run the site we rely on a few service providers, each with their own privacy practices:

Internet Archive — hosts the original concert recordings we stream.
Cloudflare — sits in front of the site for speed, security, and the cookieless analytics above.
Render — hosts the server the site runs on.
Stripe — processes tips, if you leave one.

Your rights

Because we don't hold accounts or a lasting record tied to you, there's very little personal data to request or delete. Even so, depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), including the right to know what data we hold, to ask us to delete it, and to not be discriminated against for exercising those rights. The lawful basis we rely on for the brief IP handling above is our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure and available.

Children

Stem Head is a general-audience music site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Terms of use

Stem Head is provided free, "as is," with no warranty of any kind. The recordings are live-taped Grateful Dead performances that circulate freely on the Internet Archive; stem separation is done by a third-party audio tool and does not generate or alter the performances. Please use the site for personal, non-commercial enjoyment and respect the taping and trading spirit of the community. We may change or take down features at any time. If you believe any content infringes your rights, email whereisshakedown@gmail.com and we'll address it.
